I don’t know about you, but renting a car is one of the most frustrating moments of taking a trip or when I just need to borrow a car for a short while. I’ve long complained about car rental agencies and why I can’t just walk up to a car and unlock it with an app or something. The good news is GetAround changes all that!
No longer will you have to go into the car rental building and wait in line, then give out all your information again to the agent. Now, you can just walk up to a car on the GetAround app and unlock it. If you don’t have a car, you can save money by renting a car on GetAround.
There are more than 250 million cars in the US, and they’re unused for 22 hours a day. Instead of allowing car rental companies to make money off a fleet of cars, why not make money off of yours?

If you’re looking for a car in NYC, the NJ rentals are super close and easy to get to with public transport.
What Is GetAround? How Does It Work?
GetAround is peer-to-peer sharing for cars — better yet, it’s Airbnb for cars. The best part is you never have to meet the renter, so it’s like passive income for you if you have a car!
If you don’t have a car, it’s perfect for you to rent out other people’s cars for a great price. All cars must be from 2005 or newer and have less than 125,000 miles on it.
How To Use GetAround For Car Owners
Now, here’s the GetAround piece for people who own cars. They benefit just as much from this cool app.
You can now make money by renting out your car instead of having it sit quietly unused, eating up costs.
All cars must be from 2005 or newer and have less than 125,000 miles on it.

How Much Can You Make With GetAround?
If you have a car and it’s just sitting around for hours, or even days, you should definitely consider GetAround.
Most American families have more than one car, but do you really need it? If you’re not using it for the majority of the time or can carpool a few days a week, consider listing your car for rental on GetAround and make more money each month.
You can make thousands per year if you’re renting out your car in one of GetAround’s cities.
GetAround says the average earnings per owner are $6,000, but that you can make up to $10,000 or more with a busy metro area and desired car brand.
How Does the Rental Process Work?
You’ll get an alert on your phone whenever someone makes a rental request. You can accept or reject the rental, so you always have the last say for deciding to rent to someone or not.
Potential renters must upload their drivers license and not been in any major accidents in the past few years. 20 to 30 percent of renters are rejected due to driving violations, so GetAround is pretty strict with renters credentials.
GetAround checks your license, DMV history, Facebook, and 16 other points of security interest. It’s really important to them to make sure your car is safe.
Car Insurance Up To $1,000,000
GetAround covers up to $1,000,000 in insurance.
What About Parking, Fines, Messiness, or Fuel?
GetAround makes the renter responsible for towing or parking fines for 24 hours after it has been dropped off.
The renter must return the car with the same amount of fuel, or they’ll pay for it plus $10.
There’s a $300 smoking fee and $45 cleaning fee if the renter makes a mess.
If you don’t want pets in your car, you can set that as a requirement. If someone disregards this, they’ll be hit with a fine.
How to Use GetAround – For Renters
Renters sign up with an account and upload their license. Their license gets cross-checked with the DMV.
Once you’re approved, you can choose cars based on the dates you need it and filter cars based on the price. You can search graphically with the map.
If you see something with multiple dots in the purple locator, that means there are multiple cars available for rental.
Here are the different choices you can make when you’re looking to select a car:
Rent A Car By The Hour, Day, Or Week
When I was in college, sometimes I just needed to rent a car for an hour or two. There weren’t car rental agencies near me and I it was difficult to transport bags of groceries on the bus.
I wished there was a car rental agency near me or I could rent a car by the hour, because I didn’t need it for the entire day.
GetAround allows you to rent a car by the hour, for as low as $5 an hour! You can rent out the car nearest to you so you don’t have to go far to get a car!
Here’s an example of some of the cars you can rent by the hour for.
You can also rent a car on GetAround by the day or week if you’d like.
Special Car Cases
GetAround has some pretty unique cars that you would not find for rental anywhere else.
I’ve seen a lot of smart cars. They’re the small 2-seater cars that are very gas efficient and great at navigating the city for parking spots due to the their small size.
On the other end, there are very high-end luxury cars that you wouldn’t get access to at a car rental agency.
For example, here’s a Porsche for rental:
Is GetAround Cheaper Than Car Rental Agencies?
Prices are set by each person renting their car out, and are generally much, much cheaper.
This is because someone renting out their own car doesn’t have overhead like a car rental agency does. A car rental agency has to pay for the building, employees, fancy technology, etc.
Someone using GetAround is renting out something they already own and use the app to say what days the car is available.
If the past has been any predictor of the future, GetAround will change the car rental industry.
Uber and Lyft have revolutionized the taxi industry — no longer do you need to call for a cab or wave down a taxi, you can just get a ride on an app for much cheaper.
Airbnb has revolutionized the lodging industry. You don’t need to spend piles of money to get a hotel. You can stay in someone’s extra room or house for much cheaper.
Now, there’s GetAround. Save money on car rentals if you don’t have a car. Earn money if you have a car you’re not putting to use.
GetAround: Airbnb For Cars
We love to use well-established companies to describe new companies.
I think GetAround could be the Airbnb for cars. People all across the country have houses with empty rooms in them, so Airbnb allowed them to monetize their homes.
GetAround is doing the same thing for cars. How much do normal people even use their cars? Driving their car to work and back everyday, and for buying groceries and running errands? What if you’re staying in for the weekend? Rent out your car!
GetAround Pros and Cons
You can find cheaper cars to rent through the GetAround app than through car agencies.
You can rent out your car and make money each month from an unused asset.
Now you don’t need to go to a specific car rental agency to get the car — all you need to do is go to where the car is parked. You can unlock the car with your app and don’t need to be there when the renter gets there, so it’s a good form of passive income.
Insurance is covered up to $1,000,000 on the car.
GetAround does not offer any elite tiers for people who rent cars a lot. Most car rental companies offer different tiers for people who rent cars a ton. If you rent out cars a ton, consider that it might be easier to rent with that car rental agency.
The company currently isn’t available everywhere since GetArounds sends a photographer and cleaner to make sure your car looks amazing for the renters to see. GetAround has started with the largest metropolitan cities, and is moving into smaller markets. If your city isn’t a choice, sign up so they can let you know when they’re expanding! Plus, you get $20 to try it out — consider using them on your next vacation.
