What Is GetUpside?
GetUpside is mainly a gas cashback app that offers up to 25 cents off per gallon of gas. In 2016, Kinnier and Wayne Lin, who both formerly worked at Google, started GetUpside in Washington, DC. Since then, GetUpside has expanded to other states and metropolitan markets. Over a million users have joined GetUpside and started getting cashback on gas. Getupside is working on expanding their cashback to groceries and restaurants as well.
GetUpside has been mentioned in the media frequently. Try it out, it’s a cool free resource for saving on gas.

How Does GetUpside Work?
In a sentence: Download the app, search for gas stations near you, and see the price of gas at each station with a cashback discount. Once you purchase your gas, upload the receipt to the app, and you’ll get cash back.
Step 1: Sign Up With A Promo Code Link!
Sign up with this link to get 20 cents off your first gas purchase. Once you sign up, you’ll get asked what kind of gas you usually buy. This is so GetUpside can show you the right prices for gas and its cash back.
Step 2: Find The Lowest Price Overall
Look at the gas stations near you to see which one has the lowest price after cashback. You shouldn’t be looking for the most cash back. You should be looking for the lowest price overall. Keep in mind that some gas station brands have loyalty cards with an extra discount, so be sure to factor this in!
Step 3: Claim The Gas Offer
Make sure to claim the gas offer before you fill up! Hit the claim button. If you don’t, you won’t be able to get the cash back. Each offer is only available for a few hours, so make sure to get your discount then.
Step 4: Fill Up Your Gas Before The Offer Expires
It’s best to claim an offer right before you get to the gas station in case you forget. The reason this coupon expires is that gas prices change all the time and the gas station might not be offering the same amount of cash back later. For example, if the raw price of gas drops 25 cents, the cashback offer might drop 10-15% just because the price of gas is much lower.
You can fill up to 50 gallons of gas per purchase.
Step 5: Use A Debit/Credit Card
This is a step some people forget about! You will only be able to get cash back if you pay with a debit or credit card. The app will check that you used a debit or credit card by looking at the receipt, so make sure to do this! Be sure to use a rewards credit card.
Step 6: Upload Your Receipt For Cashback
Take a picture of the receipt to get your cash back.
Make sure the following is in the picture of the receipt:
- Address of the gas station
- Date and time
- Items purchased
- Credit card type (Ie, Visa, Mastercard, Amex, etc) with the last 4 digits are clear on the receipt
Note that GetUpside only works with a credit or debit card. If you pay in cash, you won’t be able to get the cash back. You should be using credit cards for the rewards anyway, as long as you pay off your credit card in full each month.
Step 7: Get paid!
You can get paid via Paypal, check, or gift cards. Check out the details in the getting paid section later on in this blog post.
Which Gas Stations Is GetUpside Available At?
GetUpside offers cashback at all the major gas station brands:
Keep in mind that GetUpside has an exclusivity radius. In the GetUpside app, each urban gas station will be the exclusive gas station on the app within a half-mile radius. For suburban gas stations, the radius will be .75 miles and for rural areas, the exclusivity radius will be 1.5 miles.
In dense urban areas like NYC, you’ll see very few gas stations, mainly because the city can only fit less than 10 gas stations if every gas station needs to be exclusive in a .75 mile radius. For gas stations in rural areas, 1.5 miles is pretty far, so you’ll see a larger “cluster” of gas stations because everything is so spread out.
Triple Stack Your Gas Cashback
For example, when you’re buying gas, you can use a rewards credit card (if you have a high rewards card in the gas category, use that!), the GetUpside app, and the rewards club of the gas brand you frequent.
Let’s take the Shell Fuel Rewards program for example, which offers 5 cents off per gallon just for joining the program. It offers extra money off per gallon as well, but that’s the basic reward.
Triple stacking your gas rewards is a great way to save more money on something you’d buy anyway.
How Do You Get Paid With GetUpside?
You can get paid with Paypal, check, or gift card via GetUpside. Gift cards need a minimum of $10 to cash out while Paypal and check don’t require a minimum. Keep in mind there is a $1 fee if you’re cashing out a check under $50 or Paypal under $15. The fee is waived if you refer at least one person who claims an offer.
GetUpside says it takes 24-48 hours to process PayPal or a gift card and 1-2 weeks to get a check.
Since Amazon gift cards are very much like cash since 50 percent of all purchases made online are from Amazon, I’d recommend getting an Amazon gift card if you have at least $10 and can’t make the $15 Paypal minimum to avoid the $1 fee. Unlike Ibotta [$10 Signup Bonus], there isn’t a rotating gift card bonus.
Here are the gift cards that GetUpside currently offers:
- Bed, Bath, and Beyond
- Chili’s Grill & Bar
- Dunkin Donuts
- Google Play
- Home Depot
- On The Border Mex Grill
Which States Is GetUpside Available In?
GetUpside is available in:
- New York
- North Carolina
- South Carolina
- West Virginia
GetUpside isn’t available in the entire state if it is listed above. The startup founders have mostly negotiated with gas stations in urban or suburban cities. There are some rural areas, but they are mostly areas near a metropolitan city. The app is free to download, so check it out to see if any gas stations are near where you live.
GetUpside Restaurant And Grocery Cash Back
GetUpside currently only offers cash back for restaurants in the DC area. Here are a few restaurants that you can get cash back at: Angelico, Botanero, and Little Dipper Hot Pot. You can check out all the restaurants through the app.
If you’re looking for cash back for restaurants, check out Dosh [$5 Signup Bonus], which gives restaurant cash back nationally.
Cashback is calculated before tax and tip.
For groceries, you can redeem 2 offers of grocery receipts per week for cash back. In the DC area, GetUpside is featuring Street Market & Cafe and Moti’s Market.
GetUpside Referral Program
GetUpside has a referral program that offers 20 cents off your next gallon of gas and 1 cent per gallon every time someone you refer buys a gallon of gas.
If you get 1 cent for every gallon someone else buys, that’s a lot of money if you can refer a few people. The average American household buys around 650 gallons of gas per year. That’s $6.50 per year for someone you refer! Also, you’d help your friends and family save money on gas, which is great.
Does GetUpside Offer A Promo Code Or Sign Up Bonus?
GetUpside offers 20 cents off your first gallon of gas. It isn’t much, but considering how much you’d save in cash back, it’s cool they are even offering anything at all. Who doesn’t want to save money on gas?
How does GetUpside Make Money?
We’re always interested in how an app makes money. We don’t want it to be a FaceBook scenario where you are essentially the product.
GetUpside gets paid a small percentage of each transaction you make with the gas station. It’s a win-win-win scenario for you, the gas station, and the app.
GetUpside has 11k Google Play reviews with a 4.6 overall rating and 8k reviews on the Apple store with a 4.8 overall rating. Those are a ton of reviews and a great rating, so we’re happy to report that GetUpside is highly rated.
How Do The Gas Stations Make Money With GetUpside?
When we review money saving or money making apps, we want to know these apps will be around for a long time so we can get our cash back and have a great app in the rotation.
A bit of background: the way nearly all gas stations make money is through sales on non-gas related items, such as food, drinks, etc. GetUpside only takes a percentage from the gas station if the transaction is profitable, which is a win-win-win for everyone. I suspect the gas cash back discount is a loss leader. For example, a loss leader is when grocery stores offer rotisserie chickens for below market price in order to get you into the store so you can buy other things. In the end, the grocery store will make more money off of you because you went into the grocery store and bought other items.
GetUpside Cashback Is A Loss Leader
In the case of GetUpside, if you get a discount on gas, you might be more likely to purchase a giant soda or hot meal. The average car holds 12 gallons of gas. If you’re getting the maximum cashback of 25 cents per gallon of gas, that’s $3 saved per tank of gas. Considering the markup on black coffee is higher than 1,000 percent, buying a drink and some food would more than make up for it. If the app can convince you to buy milk, cereal, or other grocery staples with an extra discount since you’re already there, the gas station would be net profitable, even with a cashback offer.
If you’re trying to save money on your budget overall, make sure you’re not saving money on gas and instead of spending more on other things at the gas station! Most people will think to themselves, “Oh I got a discount on gas. I’ll just spend that money on some food or drinks.” Then they go and spend more than they saved. If you’re trying to save money, try and avoid doing this.
GetUpside Pros And Cons
The GetUpside app is the only gas cashback app that we are aware of. Get extra cash back for purchasing something you have to anyways. With gas cash back offers of up to 25 cents per gallon, the average American household could save up to $162.5 per year.
GetUpside gives you cash back via Paypal, check, or gift cards for something you’re going to buy anyway. A lot of rewards programs don’t give cash, so this is great.
GetUpside is super easy to use. All you do is click a button to claim your offer, purchase gas with a debit or credit card, and then upload your receipt to get cash back.
The app has a pretty awesome referral program if you have friends who gas up. It might be only 1 cent per gallon of gas your friend gases up, but since the average American household buys 650 gallons of gas per year, that’s $6.5 per year per person in extra cash for you!
Most gas stations offer discounts on cash, so it would be awesome if you could pay with cash and still get GetUpside cashback. Unfortunately, that isn’t an option currently. I think they need a credit or debit card to verify the transaction. Otherwise, people might try to game the system with paper receipts.
We’ve listed out the states GetUpside is currently in, so you know that they aren’t available in every location. GetUpside is rolling out new locations so that you can get cashback anywhere. In the meantime, you can still refer your friends for the promo code bonus.
GetUpside’s grocery and restaurant cashback only work in the Washington DC area. It doesn’t look like an expansion for these categories has been as quick as the gas station cash back. If you want restaurant cashback, use Dosh [$5 signup bonus]. If you want cashback via grocery stores, use Ibotta [$10 sign up bonus].
