What Is Kindle Unlimited & How Does It Work?

Amazon launched the Kindle Unlimited subscription in mid-2014. There are currently 1.4 million ebooks on Kindle Unlimited, but in this case, we should look at quality over quantity. You can read an unlimited amount of books on Kindle Unlimited, but odds are high you won’t want to.

The subscription service is available in:

  • Australia
  • Brazil
  • Canada
  • China
  • France
  • Germany
  • Japan
  • India
  • Mexico

Why You Shouldn’t Use The Kindle Unlimited: The Best Books Are Missing

The Big 5 Publishers consist of Penguin Random House, Macmillan, HarperCollins, Hachette, and Simon & Shuster.

Most books that hit the bestsellers list and that are well-known come from these Big 5 Publishers. You’ll notice Michael Lewis’s books aren’t on there either.

The biggest reason most ebooks aren’t on Kindle Unlimited is that Amazon requires titles on Kindle Unlimited to be exclusive to the Kindle. Considering Kindle Unlimited payouts consist of splitting up part of the pool of revenue that the Kindle Unlimited program generates, it isn’t the best option — popular ebooks would rather get paid a higher fixed amount per book.

There are a couple of rare series that are on Kindle Unlimited, but once you read those, it might be hard to find other popular books — the Harry Potter series and Hunger Games are on there. DC Comics just announced a partnership with Kindle Unlimited as well.

Kindle WhisperSync

WhisperSync allows you to switch between the audiobook and ebook. Your Kindle and audiobook will know where you left off. However, you’ll have to buy both copies of the book — audiobook and ebook, which can get pricey!

Keep in mind that you won’t be able to get the Kindle version of popular ebooks on the Kindle Unlimited version, as discussed in the last section. So you won’t even be able to use the Kindle Unlimited on this!

It is rare that indie authors choose to narrate their book, but if they do, there is Kindle Unlimited Audible narration, which does work the same as WhisperSync and is free. There are currently 40,000 titles that have Kindle Unlimited Audible Narration for free.

So, What Kind Of Books Are On Kindle Unlimited?

Due to the way Amazon has structured the cash payments to authors from Kindle Unlimited, the majority of popular book publishers have stayed far away from Kindle Unlimited.

As such, there are a lot of self-published authors on Kindle Unlimited. To be honest, that’s most of who is on the platform. We looked through a few of the New York Times Bestseller’s list and couldn’t find a title on the NYT Bestseller List and is also available on the Kindle Unlimited.

books on kindle unlimited

The books on Kindle Unlimited are from the KDP self-publishing program or by one of the Amazon internal publishers.

Publishers act as a kind of filter for great books that sell. They go through mountains of manuscripts and guide writers with revisions and edits. Not every book a publisher prints will do well, but since they have done so much research and have experience in knowing what readers love, they’re more likely to publish a book you’d want to read.

There are obviously underrated gems published by individual or indie authors, but sorting through all of them is difficult!

There are also popular magazines on Kindle Unlimited!

How Much Do Kindle Unlimited Books Cost Individually?

Most Kindle Unlimited books bought individually go for less than $5. The majority go for $1-$3. This is because most of them are self-published and very reasonably priced. Unless you read a ton, you could just buy individual Kindle Unlimited titles instead.

How Does Kindle Unlimited Pay Its Authors?

Kindle Unlimited pays its authors out of the subscription revenue it collects each month. Meanwhile, Scribd pays its authors based on how many pages someone has read or listened to.

Why You Might Consider Scribd For Ebook Subscriptions

Scribd allows you to read ebooks on a Kindle Fire or HD Nook if you like e-readers that have paper-like text. If you don’t need a specific kind of e-reader, you can download the Scribd app onto your Apple or Android device.

Do You Get To Keep Kindle Unlimited Titles Forever?

No, treat Kindle Unlimited as a program like a library, except that you have to pay for the subscription.

Does Kindle Unlimited Require Wifi?

You can download books to read on the Kindle Unlimited. You don’t have to be connected to wifi to read them, but you do need to have downloaded them first.

How Many Books Can I Check Out?

You can check out 10 books at a time. So if you’re going somewhere without Wifi for a while, be sure to load up on those titles before you go!

Can You Use Kindle Unlimited On Other Devices?

Yes, there’s a Kindle app for almost any kind of device you can imagine: iPhone, Android, tablet, desktop, etc.

Kindle Unlimited Pros And Cons

Pros

Kindle Unlimited has one of the largest ebook databases out there with millions of titles. However, you’ll have to determine if you want to read the titles. There are millions of Kindle Unlimited subscribers though, so they must be subscribed for a reason!

There are a few popular series that might interest you — Harry Potter as well as the Hunger Games. Kindle Unlimited also has access to popular magazines.

Kindle Unlimited has a 30-Day free trial, so check it out if you think you might like it.

Cons

Kindle Unlimited has few (if any) NYT Bestsellers and none of the 5 biggest publishers are on the Kindle Unlimited platform, which might make it hard for you to read books on it.

Kindle Unlimited is $9.99 per month, but Scribd’s unlimited program is $8.99 for an unlimited amount of audiobooks, ebooks, and magazines. Scribd does have books from the big 5 publishers because they pay the authors a fixed price per book read. Scribd also has a 30-day trial if you want to check it out.
